The concept to have a unique NZ Stamping and Scrapbooking event was started by Fiona Caldwell in 2002. After attending SDU in Sydney and meeting up with many NZ Stampers and businesses, she could see there was a need for a NZ event.
After calling for assistance from the industry via her then Stamping Newz magazine, she was joined by Donald Hurley from Hastings Rubber Stamps (who was setting up a similar event) and SENZ Ltd was formed to run one event.
We wanted an event that would be uniquely NZ, so only NZ retailers were invited to attend, but they are encouraged to bring overseas tutors to the event. SENZ is a mix of shopping, learning, socialising and creativity, and with 15 events under our belts now, it has proved to be popular for many years.
SENZ 2003 was the first event, held at the lovely Hamilton Gardens and had 30 exhibitors and around 1600 visitors. We had 2 overseas tutors, DJ Pettitt from the USA and Julie van Oosten from Australia teaching classes, as well as the top tutors from NZ - Marg Wallace, Jan Robertson, Jenny Sutherland, Petra de Geus, Robyn Cammell, and others.
SENZ 2004 was again held in Hamilton but at a bigger venue, this time with 37 exhibitors and over 2200 visitors. We had tutors from Australia - Julie van Oosten and Cathy Daulman and from the USA, owner of Stampendous, Fran Seiford. This year a Crop Night was started, hosted by Kerin Hague.
SENZ 2005 saw it moved from Hamilton for the first time, and it was decided to have 2 events, one in Christchurch in April and one in Auckland in October. It was great to see many first time exhibitors at the show in Christchurch and the atmosphere at the Riccarton Racecourse was friendly. The Auckland event was held at the new TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, and was the best venue so far - nice classrooms, new building and plenty of room.
SENZ 2006 moved to Palmerston North , and this was be the first time SENZ had been held in the lower North Island. It was a great success, with loads of happy people and exhibitors.
SENZ 2007 comes back to the lovely TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau - so easy to get to being just off the Southern Motorway and spacious and new!
SENZSouth07 was held in October at the Riccarton Racecourse. As usual the South Islanders had a great time at SENZ.
SENZ 2008 took SENZ to Wellington area for the first time, we had over 1500 visitors attend the show at Trentham Racecourse, many for the first time. We had record numbers of prepaid VIP passes sold this year, with over 500 people staying at SENZ for two - three days and enjoying classes, the crop night and dinner.
SENZ 2009 saw us back in Auckland in 2009 for the ninth SENZ, once again at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.
SENZ 2010 was held in Christchurch and we had visitors from all over NZ, from Australia to the top and bottom of NZ. The weather was cold but the atmosphere was warm!
SENZ 2011 saw us return to Auckland, and we chose the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre for the show again. Its easy to find, is relatively new (we were the first Craft event to be hosted there back in '05), and has excellent classrooms. Feedback from SENZ2011 has been really great, with many saying it was the best yet.
SENZ 2012 in Hamilton was one of the most popular venues with even better feedback than last year. A new event was the Dinner Quiz which is a chance for exhibitors, tutors, volunteers, staff and visitors to mingle and compete for the best team and last man standing prizes. We supported Rainbow Place which was a charity Create in Hamilton had supported over the years. We raised $519 for them and collected 3 boxes of unwanted craft materials from visitors and exhibitors.
SENZ 2013 saw us celebrating 10 years of SENZ in style in Manukau with an amazing cake designed by Go Bake, special birthday showbags for the VIPs, and lots of great classes.
SENZ 2014 Our first time at Ellerslie Event Centre and was a popular venue with lots of happy visitors and our largest number of exhibitors for several years. Included a larger Cake Decorating section with competitions and a cake-off and more crafts such as beading home decor and knitting. We hosted Limor Webber from Canada who taught Scrapbooking and Mixed Media classes.
SENZ2015 was at Ellerslie Event Centre again. The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the Create for Gallipoli competition, with entries from all over the country, and of an exceptionally high standard. VIP's really enjoyed having their own room to finish off classes and to meet others from around the country.
2016 which was at the Ellerslie Event Centre again. Beck Beattie and Kerrie Gurney were our visiting overseas tutors.
